BD Medical is a global medical technology company. As part of a recent expansion project, BD contracted Layton to construct a 43,000 ft2 manufacturing space / sterilization facility in their Sandy, Utah operations center.
At the heart of the new facility are state of the art sterilization chambers. They are used to ensure a sterile environment during the production of medical supplies, devices and equipment. To achieve this, the facility uses an Ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization process. The process requires special chambers that are shipped from Europe. The building exterior is painted CMU with a separate concrete building used to store and dispense the gas used in the sterilization process.
Lengthy front-end approval processes required that the construction schedule be accelerated in order to be ready for the installation of the sterilization equipment. Layton successfully completed the project in nine months, instead of the original 12-month schedule.
Despite challenges and overall technical uniqueness, Layton Construction was able to adapt and manage the project to achieve a success. |
